Site Description

The tunnel into Cork is the longest in use in Ireland (the 2nd longest ever built). Opened in 1855, it allowed trains to enter the station at Penrose Quay in lieu of terminating at Kilbarry. There are a number of air vents at the northern end of the tunnel. The southern portal of the tunnel had the erstwhile C&YR line from Summerhill station cross overhead.
